Lot 014: BMW Z3 2.8 Roadster

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (16 May 2012)

Launched in 1996 and staying in production until 2002, the Z3 was BMW's first modern mass-market roadster and was designed very much with the American market in mind. Beautifully styled by Joji Nagashima in BMW's Californian design studio, it had more than a whiff of the WW2 fighter plane about it, with an aggressively flared bonnet sporting chromed side vents that wouldn't have looked out of place on a Messerschmitt ME109. Initially powered by a 138bhp 1.9-litre 4-cylinder engine, this was quickly deemed somewhat underwhelming and from 1997 BMW's all-alloy 24-valve 2.8-litre straight-six was available as an option with a hefty 193bhp on tap. This gave the car sparkling performance, launching it to 60mph in just 6.7 seconds on its way to a top speed of 140mph. To help manage all this power, automatic traction and stability control came as standard, together with air bags and all the luxuries you would expect in a BMW (air con, power operated soft top, leather etc.). This particular Z3 2.8 Roadster looks most eye-catching in red (very seldom seen on this model) with a lovely black leather sports interior. In the current lady ownership for the last three-and-a-half years, it has covered some 95,000 miles from new with 11 service stamps to date, the last at 80,307 miles, although it has been home serviced by the lady's retired engineer husband since, with a recent oil and filter change. Recently fitted with two new tyres and a new battery, it is said to drive superbly with MOT and tax until September 2012. It comes with all its original handbooks, various old MOTs and bills and two sets of keys. These pretty little roadsters are beautifully made and great fun to drive, especially with that lovely straight-six under the bonnet. This well-cared for example looks particularly good in red and will put a big smile on the lucky new owner's face in the coming summer months.
