Lot 021: Austin Princess VDP Saloon

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (16 May 2012)

Introduced in 1963 and continuing in production until 1974, BMC's 1100/1300 range of Issigonis-styled front-drive saloons were hugely popular family cars that attracted over two million buyers in the UK alone. Softly sprung, roomy and relatively nippy in 1300cc guise, they may have lacked the cheeky glamour of the Mini but they more than made up for it in terms of everyday practicality. Pick of the crop was undoubtedly the range-topping Princess Vanden Plas, a pocket limousine aimed squarely at the middle management family man who was doing very nicely, thankyou, but didn't want to shout about it. Distinguished from its humbler siblings by a more regal grille on the outside, it saved its trump cards for the inside. Surrounded by wood and leather, Mr Brown could head for town secure in the knowledge that his work for the bank was being amply recognised. Dating from 1971, this particular 1300cc automatic Princess VDP was acquired by the Stondon Museum in 1997. With an indicated 47,468 miles on the clock, it has a luxurious blue leather and walnut interior and comes with a small amount of service history and four old MOTs.
