Lot 024: Peugeot 201 Coupe

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (16 May 2012)

Although Peugeot had been making cars since the early 1890s, it is fair to say that the 201, produced between 1929 and 1937, was the company's first volume model. It was launched on the eve of the Wall Street Crash, an economic catastrophe that finished off many car makers, but the compact and no-nonsense little 201 matched the mood of the time and turned out to be a great commercial success, establishing Peugeot as a major world player. Initially powered by a 23hp 1.1-litre sidevalve engine with transverse front suspension and coil ignition, it was capable of 50mph. Dating from 1931, this particular 201 Coupe D'Affaires was acquired by Stondon Museum in 1997. It was imported from France in 1989 by a UK Peugeot Club member, Michael Merry, who had the bodywork restored and resprayed and also had it retrimmed in grey cloth inside. A left-hand drive example that appears to be in very nice condition throughout, it seats two but has a rear Dicky seat for two additional passengers. It comes with a V5C and some French documents from the time of import in 1989. Please note: We have not had this running on site.
