Lot 034: MG B Roadster

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (16 May 2012)

In 1974 MG was forced to redesign the ever-popular MGB due to tougher crash safety legislation in America, one of the key markets for the car. The old chrome bumpers were deleted in favour of new rubber items front and rear and the ride height was raised by one inch to bring the headlamps up to the new level now required. The interior was also redesigned somewhat with a more modern fascia and improved heating and ventilation. Otherwise the car was still substantially the same as it had always been, with classically elegant bodywork and a gutsy 1.8-litre engine which gave 100mph performance. Dating from 1979, this left-hand drive Roadster has had just one lady owner from new and has covered a mere 16,700 miles to date. Apart from a recent high quality respray in the original 70s Russet Brown, it is in outstandingly original condition throughout and has never been welded. The panel gaps are still factory perfect and the underside is as solid as the top. It owes its remarkable state of preservation to the fact that it spent its first 21 years in sunny California, the English lady owner bringing it back with her when she returned to these shores in 1990, at which point it had 16,047 miles on the clock. Since then the car has been kept garaged and barely used. Just prior to the auction it was fully recommissioned including four new tyres, new fuel pump, new hoses as required, new battery and a full service. At the same time the exhaust, carburation and ignition were all replaced with UK spec components to do away with the power-sapping Californian smog kit originally fitted. Just issued with a fresh MOT, it is said to drive superbly, as you would expect from such a low mileage. Complete with its original handbook and service records plus various bills and documents, this timewarp machine is worthy of the serious MG collector especially in this memorable year, the 50th Anniversary of the MGB. Unrepeatable.
