Lot 035: Mercedes-Benz 560SEC

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (16 May 2012)

By 1981 Mercedes-Benz had launched a two-door coupe version of the all-conquering S Class W126 saloon. These big cars were bristling with technology and were built at a time when Mercedes-Benz' reputation for engineering integrity was still at its world-beating best. Lighter and more slippery than their predecessors, the new SEC range used around 10% less fuel, yet went about their business in a similarly authoritative fashion. In 1986 came the head of the family, the mighty 560SEC whose natural habitat was the fast lane of the unrestricted autobahn. Powered by an all-alloy V8 it produced 295bhp and 336lb/ft of torque and was good for a top speed of 156mph, reaching 60mph from a standstill in just 6.7 seconds. Few cars (if any) produced before or after have been as well made, or offered as much refinement, comfort or reliability. This 77,000 mile 560 dates from 1986 and has a full Mercedes-Benz service history to 57,000 miles. Supplied new with impressive AMG alloy wheels, the vendor informs us that whilst the V5C shows 4 previous keepers, it has in effect been owned by just two seperate families and that everything works as it should. It has seen little use over the last few years and has been dry stored, showing no signs of corrosion. Recently re-commissioned and given a full service, it has a fresh MOT and is ready for its new owner to experience the pinnacle of Mercedes-Benz engineering for the cost of a major service on a more recent example!
