Lot 036: BMW 2.5 CS Coupe E9

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (16 May 2012)

Launched in 1968, the BMW E9 Coupe was one of the most handsome cars ever to roll from the Munich factory. Sleek and shark-like, it had a wonderfully elegant and airy cockpit with slim windscreen pillars, a large glass area and a beautifully restrained wooden dash. Initially powered by a 2.8-litre straight-six, this was replaced by a 3-litre unit in 1971 that produced 180bhp on Solex carbs, later 200bhp with Bosch fuel injection which gave it a top speed of 140mph. The E9 platform, particularly the 3.0CSL lightweight homologation special, was very successful in racing, especially in the European Touring Car Championship and the German DRM series which helped to establish BMW's status as a sporty driver's car. The last version of the E9 to be introduced was the 2.5CS in 1974. This was a response to the 1973 oil crisis and offered customers a slightly smaller, more economical 2.5-litre straight-six engine from the 2500 saloon. This produced 150bhp and 115lb/ft of torque. Driving through a 4-speed manual gearbox it could propel the car to 60mph in 9.6 seconds on its way to a top speed of 125mph. The rarest of all the E9 Coupes, only 844 were made, all in left-hand drive, until production came to an end in 1975. Dating from 1975, this particular 2.5CS is presented in silver with a blue velour interior and has covered an indicated 89,100km from new (55,700 miles). Currently on German registration papers, the car is said to be in excellent condition throughout and to drive beautifully. Recently serviced and fitted with many new parts, the car has also just had a new clutch fitted by BMW about 100km ago. It also comes with a certificate of authenticity issued by BMW confirming that it was supplied new by a dealer called Garling in Hersfeld in July 1975 and that it was always Polaris Silver. With the recent astronomical rise in CSL prices, this car looks like a shrewd investment at the guide price suggested today.
