Lot 042: Buick Le Sabre Convertible

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (16 May 2012)

In 1951 the father of American car sytling, Harley Earl, displayed a concept car for Buick called the LeSabre. Eight years later, as part of GM's overall model strategy, Buick announced their all new LeSabre, their new full size car, sharing nothing with the original concept bar the name which lasted until the end of the line in 2005. The 4th generation LeSabre on sale today carried over is bulk, gaining in size if anything, making this example very much the full fat variety. Furthermore its 455 cubic inch (7.45-litre) V8 was their biggest offering and came mated to a Turbo Hydra-matic auto gearbox as standard. New for 1972 was a full width rear seat in the convertible (full width being the operative word), a wrap-around console for the driver, variable ratio power steering and upgraded power brakes. This impressive tax exempt 1972 example was bodily restored around 5 years ago. It is described by the vendor to be in good and sound condition with good paintwork. The hood (or should that be top!) has been replaced fairly recently and it has had a new windscreen at a cost of around 600. The gearbox has been overhauled and a new camshaft, timing gears, distributor and oil pump also fitted. He informs us that it is running and driving well and it is MOTd until July this year. With the value of these cars rising steadily across the Atlantic, this example looks like excellent value at the suggested guide price, being a considerably cheaper and less risky alternative to personally importing a similar vehicle purchased sight unseen.
