Lot 044: MG C GT

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (16 May 2012)

First seen in 1967, the MGC was BMC's attempt to plug the gap left in its range by the demise of the Healey 3000, but without having to build a completely new car. It used a modified version of the MGB bodyshell and was powered by a tuned version of the C-Series straight-six engine used in the Austin 3-Litre saloon. In the twin SU carburettor form used in the MGC, the engine produced 145bhp and could propel the car to 60mph in 10 seconds on its way to a top speed of 120mph. It also had better brakes than the MGB, larger 15-inch wheels, lower geared rack-and-pinion steering and special torsion bar suspension with telescopic dampers. These tweaks, combined with a pronounced bonnet bulge to clear the larger engine, gave the MGC an altogether more purposeful look than the humble MGB. Dating from 1968, this Snowberry White example was fully restored by the current vendor in 2004-05. As is recorded on bills and photographs in the history file, this included a full body restoration and repaint, an engine and gearbox rebuild, new fuel tank and full braking system overhaul. Spax adjustable shock absorbers were fitted to the front suspension and Koni shocks to the rear. The black leather interior is largely unrestored and original. Since its restoration was completed the car has only covered some 6,000 miles and is said to drive beautifully. Indeed it has been driven over from Dublin for the sale. It comes with virtually all old MOTs from 1989 to 2004 (when the car was in England). It is due to have a new UK MOT by the time of sale and comes with a set of MG branded luggage and an original owner's handbook. Please note that this car will need to be registered in the UK. Any registration costs will be the responsibility of the buyer.
