Lot 065: Morris Minor Tourer

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (16 May 2012)

CATALOGUE AMENDMENT: The vendor has not been able to MOT this car in time for the sale. Launched at the 1948 Earls Court Motor Show, the Alec Issigonis-designed Morris Minor went on to become one of the most successful British cars of all time with over one million units sold by 1961 and production continuing right up until 1971. It was conceived as a vehicle to combine many of the luxuries and conveniences of a good motor car with a price suitable for the working classes. Compared with competitor products throughout the 1950s, it excelled as a roomy vehicle with superior cornering/handling characteristics which continue to delight driving enthusiasts to this day. The first MM Series models lasted until 1952 when the Minor line was updated as the Series II with an Austin-designed 803cc overhead valve A-Series engine replacing the original side-valve unit. The new engine felt stronger, though acceleration was still leisurely with 63mph as the top speed and 39mpg economy. The Minor came in several variants including two and four-door saloons, a wood-framed Traveller estate, a panel van and a pick-up. Most glamorous and sought-after of all was the convertible Tourer model which offered top-down motoring at a budget price. Dating from 1954, this particular Tourer is said to be in very good condition throughout with a particularly nice red leather interior and a new hood. The car has only covered some 300 miles during the last 13 years and may benefit from some light recommissioning before being put back into regular use, although the brakes have recently been overhauled and it is due to have a fresh MOT before the sale. It comes with various old MOTs, several bills for routine maintenance and the last bill of sale to the previous owner.
