Lot 069: Mercedes-Benz S600 Coupe

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (16 May 2012)

Ten years and over $1bn in development time and costs, the W140 Series Mercedes was finally launched in 1991 and introduced innovations such as double-pane window glazing, power-assisted closing for doors and boot lid, electric windows which lowered back down upon encountering an obstruction, sonar-assisted parking and a heating system which, if desired, continued to emit warm air after the engine was turned off. For details like this, the W140 is often known as the last Mercedes to be 'over-engineered', a Mercedes trait that was costing the company in product delays and over-budgeting. Available as either a saloon or a coupe, it came with a choice of engines ranging from a 2.8-litre straight-six to a mighty 6-litre V12 which produced 402bhp and 428lb/ft of torque. It remained in production until 1999 with a styling face-lift in 1994. First registered in January 1996, this particular S600 Coupe has the range-topping 6-litre V12 engine and has covered 67,500 miles to date in the hands of just three owners. It comes with a full service history comprising 7 stamps to date and is said to be in excellent condition throughout. Riding on AMG alloy wheels, it also has an upgraded interior with a wood dash surround and full leather dash which pushed the new price of the vehicle to a heady 105,000. Taxed until the end of June and due to have a fresh MOT before the sale, this low mileage super cruiser looks huge value at the modest guide price suggested today.
