Lot 076: Land Rover Series III 88

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (16 May 2012)

CATALOGUE AMENDMENT: This car has a 4-speed, not 5-speed manual gearbox. Produced from 1971 until 1985, the Series III Land Rover was little changed cosmetically from the preceding Series IIA but had many detail improvements to meet increased competition from rival 4x4 manufacturers. It was the first model to feature synchromesh on all four gears and also had a much improved cabin with better safety and comfort features. In 1980 the 4-cylinder 2.25-litre engines (both petrol and diesel) were updated with five-bearing crankshafts to increase strength in heavy duty work, the petrol engine (as here) producing 73bhp. At the same time the transmission, axles and wheel hubs were redesigned for increased strength to combat the all-too-common problem of the rear axle half-shafts breaking under heavy usage. The best-selling of all the Series Land Rovers, some 440,000 SIIIs were produced in total. Dating from 1981, this particular 88 petrol hardtop SIII has covered just 44,000 miles from new in the hands of four keepers. Said to be in excellent and highly original condition throughout, with a notably sound chassis, it also benefits from De Luxe seats (an option in 1981), 5-speed manual gearbox with high and low transfer, and four nearly new tyres. It comes with 12 old MOTs to verify the low mileage and is currently MOTd until January 2013 and taxed until next February. These SIII Land Rovers are becoming increasingly collectable and this fine low mileage example looks like a shrewd buy at the guide price suggested today.
