Lot 099: Range Rover 2 Door
Land-Rover made a series of bold claims in their Range-Rover brochure of 1971 The most versatile car in the world and Roughing it in luxury- however they may well have been true. More prophetic still was their claim that the Range-Rover heralded an entirely new age of travel, bringing exciting fresh prospects to motoring in the 1970s and beyond. Whilst they were clearly pleased with themselves, they had not envisaged that beyond meant more than 40 years and that early examples can now fetch more than new ones!
A 1973 model, XWP 979M was purchased by the vendor in 1986 to use as a tow vehicle for his vehicle transport business. It soon changed into a major restoration project, with a huge list of new components being incorporated into the vehicle. These included two new front wings, a new top tailgate, windscreen, new front inner wheel arches, sills and footwell floors. The car was repainted white and thoroughly undersealed to protect the work that had been done.
Mechanically the original engine was given a new camshaft, tappets, pushrods and rocker gear, whilst exchange heads were fitted during the build-up. The springs and shock absorbers were also replaced as were the track rod ends and a Warwick handling kit fitted. A power steering system and box were fitted from a later vehicle. New Michelin tyres to the correct pattern complete the look.
Inside the headlining has been replaced, whilst the seats come from a later version, replaced due to deterioration of the now so rare plastic ribbed seats. Due to a change in circumstances the vendor lost interest in the car and it was last used on the road back in 1992. Having been properly stored, the car still looks fresh and sits well and just needs a new owner to enjoy and cherish it as it deserves.
