Lot 228: Maserati 2400 Cambiocorsa Spyder

Cars & Motorcycles, Historics at Brooklands (26 May 2012)

The Maserati 4200GT is an evolution from the previous model 3200GT and also a reference to the increase in engine size from 3.2 litre to 4.2 litre. The Spyder was first unveiled to the public at the 2001 Frankfurt Auto Show with the Coupé's debut following shortly after at the 2002 Detroit Auto Show. Both cars were designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro of ItalDesign, who also designed the Maserati Ghibli. The 2400 Spyder has a soft-top roof that is electronically operated by a pushbutton on the centre console. The roof automatically stows beneath a hard cover that sits flush with the body in front of the boot. Both deployment and stowage of the soft-top takes about 30 seconds. Arch-type roll bars are provided behind each seat. The Spyder's 96.1inch wheelbase is 8.6 inches shorter than the 2400 Coupé's. The naturally aspirated V8 engine was based on a Ferrari unit producing 385hp at 7000rpm; the manual gearbox is a six-speed that was available either as a GT (manual gear shift) or CC (Cambiocorsa) using paddle shifters. The GT version utilizes a foot operated clutch, whereas the Cambiocorsa, (meaning 'race change' in Italian) is an electrohydraulic manual transmission that uses a Formula One type gearbox with hydraulic operation and electronic management operated by F1-style paddles behind the steering wheel; similar to the system used in Ferrari cars. The gearbox is located at the back of the car with the rear differential giving equal weight disproportion between the front and rear of the car giving better road holding. This 2002 Maserati 2400 Cambiocorsa Spyder was supplied in the West Midlands by PJ Evans before they became part of Stratstone. Finished in silver with maroon leather interior and matching maroon mohair roof, this car has been in the West Midlands all its life and comes with a full service history until the last service in 2009 at just over 67,000 miles. The vendor is having a service and MoT test carried out before the sale so the car is ready to drive away. This Spyder is supplied with a V5C registration document, a new MoT test certificate and a complete handbook wallet with handbooks, service books etc. This is an excellent, properly maintained example of a Ferrari powered Maserati; the perfect car for the summer.
