Lot 243a: Porsche 911S
The original Porsche 911 with its famous, distinctive and durable design was introduced in the autumn of 1963 and built until 1989. Mechanically, it was notable for being rear-engined and air-cooled. From its inception, the 911 was modified both by private racing teams and the Porsche factory itself for racing, rallying and other automotive competitions. The original 911 series is often cited as the most successful competition car ever, especially when its variations are included; namely the powerful 911-derived 935 which won Le Mans as well as other major sports cars races. In 1967 Porsche introduced the 911T model and subsequently a 911E version, however, the 911S was the most desirable and with only 3,174 Porsche 911S's manufactured from 1969-1971, good quality surviving examples are rare and highly sought after. This genuine 911S was originally registered in 1971 in the Channel Islands and arrived on the mainland the following year. The current vendor purchased the vehicle in 1988 and prior to his stewardship, the service history details a comprehensive collection of invoices dating back to 1977. From the many MoT certificates available, the indications are the odometer reading of 61,314 miles would appear to be correct. In 1995, the current vendor commissioned a full restoration on the car comprising a full bare metal re-spray, a complete engine rebuild including new pistons, liners and camshaft together with extensive interior trim work. The work was carried out by Porsche specialists, Autotec of York, with the restoration cost of the mechanical enhancements alone in excess of £12,000. Since the restoration, the car has never been used in inclement weather and has been stored correctly in a dry garage under a protective cocoon. Less than 1,000 miles have been covered since the completion of the restoration in 1997 resulting in this genuine 911S remaining in outstanding condition. Supplied with a V5 registration document and an MoT test certificate valid until 13th February 2013, this righthand drive 911S is not only a proper driver's car, but with S's on the rise, according to Autofarm's recent article, this striking example can also be regarded as a very sound investment.
