Lot 254: Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT Veloce

Cars & Motorcycles, Historics at Brooklands (26 May 2012)

The foundation for Alfa Romeo producing outstanding road and racing cars was set in the 1920s and 1930s and highlighted by Nuvolari beating the advanced Mercedes-Benz and Auto Unions with an outdated P3 in 1935; a tradition which has carried through decades. In 1963 and a new Alfa Romeo was born with the introduction of the 105 series Bertone Giulia GT. Based upon the 105 series 1300cc Berlina introduced a year earlier, this new coupé boasted a 1600 twin cam all alloy engine and five speed gearbox. The Bertone body featured the Scalino (stepped) front end styling with the bonnet being a ¼ of an inch higher than the nose of the car. In 1965 the model was revised with the introduction of the GT Veloce. There were detail changes to the trim and an extra 3bhp added to the power; the torque however, was significantly increased. Both models of the Sprint GT and GT Veloce models went on to become popular in standard form and spurned the successful competition version, the GTA (Gran Turismo Allegerita (or lightened)). Today we are proud to present an outstanding 1967 Giulia Sprint GT Veloce recently built for track day and fast road use. Manufactured on the 28th February 1967, this GT was then dispatched to Switzerland, eventually becoming a hill climb car in more recent times. The current owner imported the Alfa Romeo from Switzerland and commissioned Alfaholics, one of the UKs leading Alfa Romeo 105 series specialists, to produce a motor car with only the best materials and parts, resulting in the final build cost of approximately £80,000. The car was stripped to a bare shell with the body, interior, under bonnet and boot painted to a high quality finish inside and out. Once completed, the shell was then built using Alfaholics parts including a T45 fully welded-in race roll cage, glass fibre boot, bonnet, doors and GTA 1967 Homologation rear arches. A heated lightweight windscreen, perspex rear screen, GTA grill and a GTA sliding window kit are also fitted. Mechanically, the engine is an Alfaholics 195bhp Twin Spark unit with 3-D mapped ignition. Fuel is delivered via a 55 litre aluminium fuel tank, race line fuel conversion and fed through twin 45mm Weber carburettors. The engine is topped with the Alfaholics TS GTam cam cover and cooled via an aluminium radiator with race oil cooler system. A fully rebuilt five speed gearbox incorporates the builder's race paddle clutch with hydraulic operational conversion. Drive to the rear is through a race propshaft mated to a race axle with a 4.55 ratio limited slip differential. The rear brakes are four pot aluminium callipers and the FIA 2 ¼ inch front springs are fitted with a geometry kit, race aluminium t-bar, extreme lightweight trailing arms, aluminium race dampers with coil over rear springs. Electrical equipment includes a lightweight battery, electronic Stack rev. counter and Xenon HID headlight kit. The interior is fitted with Recaro race seats with Schroth six-point race harnesses. A bespoke trimmed dashboard and tailored floor runner carpets are included. A plumbed in lightweight FIA compliant gas fire extinguisher system is fitted with a bottle weight of only 2.25kg. To finish, this Alfa Romeo sits on Alfaholics 7x15 GTA Superleggera alloy wheels shod with Yokohama AO48 tyres. This is by no means an exhaustive list and any potential purchaser is encouraged to view the car and inspect the history file. Fully UK registered, the vendor informs us that an MoT certificate will accompany the car to the sale. Having only travelled in the region of 100 miles since completion of the build, this must be considered a rare opportunity to acquire an iconic Alfa Romeo completed to the highest standard, specification and finish by the UKs leading specialists and available at a fraction of the build cost.
