Lot 265: Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Sport

Cars & Motorcycles, Historics at Brooklands (26 May 2012)

The first Porsche 911 was introduced in 1963 as the replacement for the much loved Porsche 356. It has a distinctive design; rear-engined and with independent rear suspension, an evolution of the swing axle on the Porsche 356. The engine was also air-cooled until the introduction of the Type 996 in 1998. Since its introduction in 1963, it has undergone continual development, although the basic concept has remained little changed. In 1973, the Carrera name was re-introduced from the 356 Carrera which had itself been named after Porsche's class victories in the Carrera Panamericana races in Mexico in the 1950's. The RS was built so that Porsche could enter racing formulae which demanded that a certain minimum number of production cars were made. The most notable advances in 1984 were the introduction of the 3.2-litre engine. Although it remained an air-cooled 'flat six', the '3.2' was 80% new and incorporated an effective cam chain tensioner and associated lubrication system that at last addressed a perennial 911 shortcoming. With 231bhp on tap, the new 'boxer' motor endowed the Carrera with a level of performance approaching that of the original 911 Turbo of 1974, the bald statistics being a 0-60mph time of 5.3 seconds and a top speed of 152mph. This beautifully presented Carrera Sport was supplied new in the United Kingdom in February 1984. Painted in Guards Red with black interior, this car comes with a complete history file from new showing that the engine was completely rebuilt in 1990 at 63,000 miles, the gearbox was overhauled in 1993 and, more recently, the brakes were overhauled in 2011 which included replacing the brake discs, brake pads and all the flexible brake lines. This Porsche is fitted with 911 Turbo wheels and is supplied with a V5C registration document, an MoT test certificate valid until February 2013, a Porsche certificate of authenticity and a large file containing invoices and old MoT test certificates going back to when the car was new; all of which testify that this has been a much loved sports car throughout its life.
