Lot 297: Alfa Romeo 90

Cars & Motorcycles, Historics at Brooklands (26 May 2012)

Introduced in 1984 at the Turin Motor Show, the Bertone designed Alfa Romeo 90 was marketed between the Alfa Romeo Alfa 6 and the Alfa Romeo Alfetta; both of which were soon discontinued after the launch of the 90. The car was targeted at the executive market and continued in production until 1987. The chassis was based upon the Alfetta and included the Alfetta's five speed gearbox/transaxle arrangement. The coachwork was similar to both the Alfa 6 and Alfetta. Several engine options were available including 1779cc, 1962cc fuel injection, 1996cc V6, 2492cc V6 fuel injection and 2393cc turbo diesel made by VM Motori. The 1962cc injection also incorporated a variable camshaft timing system. The 90 was well equipped with electric front windows and adjustable seats as standard. One notable feature of the 90's design was a small chin spoiler which extended above a certain speed to aid engine cooling. The luxurious Gold Cloverleaf (Quadrifoglio Oro) model had electric rear windows, a trip computer, power steering, central locking, metallic paint and a digital instrument panel as standard. With only two owners since new and a recorded mileage of 38000 miles, this Alfa Romeo 90 Gold Cloverleaf (Quadrifoglio Oro) presented today could be considered one of the best examples available. We are advised by the vendor that; "the first owner had it as his company car but it was hardly used as he was office based. He then retired, kept the car and registered it in his own name. He is more than willing to confirm the authenticity of the 90 to any prospective future owner". We are also advised that everything works as it should including the onboard computer. The interior is firm with no wear; almost as if it has never been sat in, and the spare wheel and tyre appear to have never been used. The 90 is driven by the legendary and silky smooth 2.5 litre V6 engine and reassuringly a full service was recently carried out by Sunnyside Garage, London's leading Alfa Romeo specialist that included a replacement cambelt, suspension and propshaft overhaul. It has also been fully wax oiled and has the original supplying dealer sticker in the rear window and original supplying dealer number plates. The factory fitted radio cassette is also still in place. With a current MoT certificate valid until March 2013 and road fund licence valid until the end of August 2012, this smart and rare Alfa Romeo may be enjoyed immediately. Surely, this is an opportunity not to be missed for any Alfa Romeo collector.
