Lot 190: Jaguar XJ6 S2 SWB Manual o/d

Annual Jaguar Heritage + Sports and Prestige Cars, Barons (28 May 2012)

The time is September 1968 and the Telegraph magazine has a large feature on the new Jaguar saloon. The journalist is wowed by the ride quality and all-round performance of this new Jaguar, as would all those who tested the model over the coming months. The new model was, of course, the XJ6, which was often awarded the accolade of the "Best Car in the World" and formed the basis of the Jaguar saloon range for the next 20 years, in both six and twelve cylinder form. By 1974 the American market demanded changes to comply with new universal bumper height regulations. This meant quite a few changes to the frontal area of the XJ, which required a shallower grille, new bonnet, new front wings, re-located side light and indicator pods and other less obvious changes. With these and a number of other improvements, the XJ S2 was launched. The 2.8 was replaced with a 3.4 and the XJ12 was now firmly established. There was initially a choice of SWB and LWB but this soon merged into a single body-shell, with the SWB consigned to history but still used for the short lived XJC, 2-door coupe. Offered here is a rare manual overdrive example of the S2 4.2 SWB saloon, which is described as being a very original car, which has never seen a welding torch and has covered a mere 59,000 miles in 38 years. Finished in regency red with beige leather, the car has benefited from a high quality repaint in 2011, as a result of fading original paintwork. Said to drive exceptionally well, this 4-speed manual, short wheelbase XJ6 is a real rarity. Apart from the repaint, the car remains original in every way and is offered with an MoT through to March 2013, tax through to August 2012 and photographs of the car before the repaint, showing how sound the car was. A rare opportunity offering outstanding value.
