Lot 415: Ford Thunderbird with Hardtop

Collectors' Motorcars and Automobilia, Bonhams (3 June 2012)

In 1956, the previous owner's mother neighbored Edsel Ford, whose son Henry Ford gave her this car as a gift. According to her son, it wasn't really to her taste and was promptly parked up across the driveway. There it sat, while he eyed it enviously then still a year away from a license. Over the course of the next year he hatched a plan to make the car his, which was that if he were to achieve an 'A' in his upcoming tests then his prize would be the 'T-Bird'. No doubt both were winners as he was inspired to work hard, but shortly after his 16th birthday Henry Ford's gift passed to him. The car had been supplied new through the Jacksonville Ford Agent and was as now in black paint with a black and white interior, it never had a soft top, just the port-hole less hard top it retains to this day. Over the course of the ensuing 58 years the T-Bird has been enjoyed and cherished. Its condition reflects its age, and while totally original there is visible corrosion in the lower doors, to the trunk lid and trunk floor. Mechanically, the present owner has worked to improve things under the hood. Over the winter, a new radiator, air filter, idler arm and tie rods were fitted, along with a stainless steel exhaust system and all four brake drums. The cars has been driven a little to ensure things are functioning properly, but has not been driven extensively. Although acquired only last fall, and with the intention of further work, family events have prompted the sale of the car. A rare second chance to own a T-bird with unique history, this Ford is ready for only its third keeper in over half a century.
