Lot 154: Vincent 998cc Black Lightning Replica

Important Collectors' Motorcars & Motorcycles, Bonhams (16 June 2012)

This motorcycle was built by the vendor's late father between (approximately) 1987 and 1989 utilising an engine purchased in the 1960s together with frame parts from a Comet. His intention was to create a modern version of the Black Lightning, with suspension and brakes to match the performance of the tuned engine. The latter was entrusted to Bob Dunn for rebuilding and tuning, and is thought to be to at least Black Lightning specification, featuring front heads on both cylinders. Not being a believer in originality for its own sake, the owner opted to incorporate modern technology including Amal Concentric Mk2 carburettors, Kawasaki front disc brakes, a rear disc brake, Honda CBR600 rear shock absorber, Suzuki GS1000 clutch, 2" open exhaust pipes, Smiths tachometer, 160mph speedometer and modern tyres. Its late owner fabricated many of the parts himself, including the alloy seat and side panels. In 1991 the Vincent won 1st Prize in the MCN 'Classic Special' category at the Classic Bike Show at Stafford. It was sprinted at Houghton Tower, winning its class, and judged 'Best Special' at the Ramsey Sprint in the Isle of Man. Used up to its owner's death and inherited by the vendor in 2004, the Vincent continued in use until 2007, since when it has been kept in heated storage and started on a regular basis. We are advised that although the motorcycle has always carried the registration 'LOP 196', there is no Swansea V5C document or old logbook relating to it. Some old MoT certificates are on file, the last of which expired on 12th March 2011, together with a VMCC dating certificate indicating that the upper frame was manufactured in 1951 and the engine in 1948. The vendor advises us that the machine should only need a modest amount of re-commissioning in order to be used again in its present condition.
