Lot 240: Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk5 'Edition 30' Hatchback

Important Collectors' Motorcars & Motorcycles, Bonhams (16 June 2012)

The 'Edition 30' marked the 30th anniversary of the Golf's introduction. Unlike most 'limited edition' projects, which mainly use styling alterations, Volkswagen opted to enhance both performance and style. Maximum output of the 2.0-litre MkV GTI engine was increased by 30bhp to 230 horsepower, only 17bhp short of its R32 cousin, and with a 0-60mph time of 6.8 seconds only fractionally slower of the mark. Changes to the bodywork included colour-coded bumpers, side skirts, a Votex front spoiler, tinted rear lights and BBS 'Pescara' 18" alloy wheels. The revised interior featured 'Edition 30' embossed plaques and sills, 'retro-chic' Vienna leather and Interlagos mix trim, and saw the return of the golf ball-styled gear knob. First registered by Volkswagen Group and retained as a press car, the example offered here has had only one private (lady) owner from new and comes with full VW service history. Its most impressive specification includes driver/passenger front/side air bags, traction control, climate control, alarm, front/rear curtain air bags, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability programme, radio/CD, rake/reach adjustable steering column/wheel, front/rear electric windows, remote central locking, whiplash protection system, split folding rear seats, driver/passenger heated seats, power assisted steering, front fog lamps, rev counter, electric/heated door mirrors, auto dimming rear view mirror, rain sensor, space saver spare wheel, trip computer, front head restraints, driver/passenger seat lumbar support, heat insulating tinted glass and rear power socket. Since the lady owner emigrated one year ago the car has been dry stored and started regularly. It passed the MoT test with no advisaries only last month. The cam belt, tensioner and water pump were last changed in December 2010 (at 31,160 miles) and 'OY56 OXB' currently displays a total of circa 37,000 miles on the odometer. The car is offered with the aforementioned full service history, VW authentication letter, two old MoT certificates, Swansea V5C document and MoT to May 2013.
