Lot 260: DAX AC Cobra MkIII 427' Replica

Important Collectors' Motorcars & Motorcycles, Bonhams (16 June 2012)

Rightly regarded as one of the all-time great classic sports cars, the muscular, fire-breathing Cobra succeeded in capturing the hearts of enthusiasts like few of its contemporaries, the car's enduring popularity resulting in its revival by Autokraft in 1980 after twelve years out of production. In 1985 Autokraft was granted exclusive use of the 'Cobra' name, continuing production into the 1990s. In parallel with Autokraft's 'official' MkIV version, a worldwide cottage industry of replica-builders emerged to satisfy the continuing demand for the legendary Cobra, making it arguably the most popular 'kit car' of all time. Among the foremost practitioners is D J Sportscars, of Harlow, Essex, whose Dax products are recognised by Cobra enthusiasts as among the most accurate and best engineered available. Known as the 'Tojeiro', Dax's version represents the Cobra in its ultimate, wide-bodied, MkIII, '427' specification, and was first introduced in 1983. Robustly constructed around a high strength, low weight chassis, the Dax was - and still is - available to suit a wide range of engines, including Jaguar six-cylinder and V12, as well as a choice of American V8s. This Dax Cobra 427 replica has inherited the registration and chassis numbers from the Jaguar donor car used in its construction. We are advised that the vehicle has been assembled to exacting standards using only top quality components, including a tuned example of the correct 7.0-litre Cobra Jet V8 engine. Power/torque figures of 430bhp and 480lb/ft are claimed for the latter, which drives via a four-speed 'top loader' manual gearbox complete with Hurst racing shifter. The steel platform chassis boasts independent suspension all round, 4-pot vented front disc brakes, inboard rear brakes and adjustable dampers. A full listing of the mechanical specification is available. Circa 5,000 dry miles only have been covered since the car was built in 1990 and it remains in concours condition; indeed, it was one of the star attractions at the AC Owners Club Rally at Woodvale, Southport. Previously forming part of a large private collection, 'RNR 45M' was purchased by the current owner at Bonhams' Goodwood 'Festival of Speed' Sale in July 2008 (Lot 576), since when it has covered only a few hundred miles as evidenced by expired MoTs on file. While in the vendor's care the car has been fitted with a replacement brake master cylinder and servo (in June 2009) and was last serviced in April 2010. This fastidiously maintained Cobra is offered with current road fund licence, MoT to June 2013 and latest the Swansea V5C document. An exciting opportunity to acquire one of the finest examples of the car still reckoned the ultimate in raw, 'wind in the face' performance.
