Lot 108: Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn Ex Dirk Bogarde

Fine Motor cars incl. The Jaguar Legend, Coys (14 July 2012)

The Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn, produced by Rolls-Royce at Crewe from 1949 to 1955, was the first model to be offered with a factory designed and built body, which it shared in mildly altered form, with the Bentley Mark VI until 1952 and then the Bentley R Type until production finished in 1955. The car was first introduced for export only as part of the 'export or die' policy of the post-war Labour government. Left hand drive models had a column gear shift, while right hand drive cars had the traditional RR right handed floor shift by the door. Only with the R Type based model did automatic transmission become available on the home market, from October 1952. A mere 760 Silver Dawns were produced between 1949 and 1955; this delightful late specimen, the 'long boot' version, is finished in the ever-popular livery of Embassy Black with beige leather interior, and belonged to the actor Dirk Bogarde, certainly among the biggest British stars of the era. SPG53 appeared in the 1957 film Doctor at Large, one of several massive hits of the time on which Bogart starred with James Robertson Justice, and is arguably, the most significantly important and recognised Silver Dawn film car on the market today. Currently the property of a well-regarded Rolls-Royce enthusiast in the South of England, YPP 360 has recently been used for continental touring and has travelled as far as Bavaria, the Black Forest and Northern France. Reported to be in good overall condition, and MoT'ed until May 2013, YPP 360 is offered with a V5 registration papers , a quantity of old service bills, expired MoTs and Factory chassis build record cards. This is a unique opportunity to acquire a very uncommon and usable Rolls Royce with an unusually interesting and charming history.
