Lot 115: Mercedes-Benz 190SL

Fine Motor cars incl. The Jaguar Legend, Coys (14 July 2012)

Stylistically evocative of the mighty 300SL, but with a slightly less complex drive train, the Mercedes-Benz 190SL remains among the most desirable roadsters of its era. The prototype was first shown at the 1954 New York Auto Show, with the 190SL produced between May 1955 and February 1963. The 190SL was sold alongside the faster, more expensive Mercedes-Benz 300SL, similar not just in terms of styling, engineering, and detailing, but also sharing fully independent suspension, double wishbone suspension at the front, and swing axles at the rear. The 190SL was powered by a new, slightly over square 1.9 litre straight-four SOHC engine that developed 120hp with twin-choke dual Solex carburettors; the four-cylinder engine block was based on the six-cylinder engine of the 300 SL. Teamed with a four-speed manual gearbox, this endowed the sleek, aerodynamic and comparatively light 190SL boasted a top speed of 115mph and respectable 0-60mph time of 13.0 seconds. This 1956 example is an original left hand drive car owned by a single family in New Zealand for 25 years, and is described by the current owner as being 'absolutely beautiful', with the coachwork resplendent in red, contrasted with a black hide interior and black hood. The condition of the car is due to the paint work, chrome, hood and carpets, which have either been restored or renewed since November 2011. The car is supplied with a V5 document, MoT certificate valid until November 2012 and various bills from leading UK Mercedes-Benz specialists since November 2011, as well as receipts from its time in New Zealand. A chic and stylish Mercedes-Benz, it is easy to see why these cars have been popular with enthusiasts, and with the price of equivalent 300SLs in the region of 500,000, this is a marvellous opportunity to buy into that same styling and engineering, but at a fraction of the price.
