Lot 122: Volkswagen Karmann Ghia

Fine Motor cars incl. The Jaguar Legend, Coys (14 July 2012)

The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia was produced between 1955 and 1974, with some 360,000 coupes and over 80,000 cabriolets completed. For sure, it was the most beautiful car ever produced by the Beetle Meisters; less clear is exactly how the car was designed and conceived. Certainly the initial idea was sparked when Dr Wilhelm Karmann, building the Beetle cabriolet, suggested to Ghia that a beetle-based sports car could be made and presented to VW for their approval. Several people claim a stake in the car's concept, in addition to the obvious triumvirate of VW in Wolfsburg, Karmann in Osnabruck and Ghia in Turin. What is assured, however, is that this elegant design, considered by many to be way ahead of its time, holds a firm place both in automotive design classics and in the hearts and minds of many enthusiasts and collectors around the world. With few available at any one time, the Karmann Ghia, especially in this condition, is always worth garage space.

This original right hand drive example has covered some 63,000 miles from new and was in the ownership of Kelly Jones lead singer of the chart topping and critically acclaimed Stereophonics for several years, before being sold to the band mate and current owner Javier Weyler in 2007.

Beautifully repainted and reconditioned by VW specialists Terry's Beetle services, the car was stripped to bare metal and finished in a period silver colour with contrasting black interior fitted with the original radio and glove compartment. Sitting on original Empi wheels, this fine example is supplied with original 1972 VW instruction manual, VW service record and diagnosis punch card booklet. Also contained in the file is ownership history dating back over 20 years along with MoT certificates dating back to the late 1980s and service and parts receipts traceable to 2004. A V5 document, current MoT certificate and road fund licence both valid until December 2012 are also included in the sale.

Described as being in excellent condition throughout, and with the svelte lines as fresh today as in the 1960s, this rock star owned Karmann Ghia is an extremely collectible motor car.
