Lot 52: Austin Seven Opal Cabriolet

Classics Cars, Charterhouse (15 July 2012)

Sir Herbert Austin's new editions to the Seven range were introduced to the press in 1934 - Opal, Ruby and Pearl 'The Austin Jewels' . The Opal was the basic two seater version, and cost 100. In 1936, the Opal received some improvements including a four speed gearbox with synchromesh on second, third and fourth gears. The engine was upgraded with a three bearing crankshaft which allowed the compression ratio to be increased which in turn increased the power output to 16 bhp. This particular Opal has just emerged from a body off rebuild. During the restoration the body was removed from the chassis which was shotblasted and re-painted. The coachwork was repaired as necessary, and re-sprayed in blue with black wings. The interior received the same attention to detail, with new black leather seats and door cards, and new carpets. All of the weather gear has been renewed in double duck, including a tonneau cover. The mechanical side was taken care of by Tim Whellock, including a full engine re-build, new wiring loom, radiator core, braking system and numerous other items associated with a comprehensive re-build. The history file contains numerous receipts from Tim Whellock for many thousands of pounds, RF60 continuation log book and an Austin Service Journal. The vendor informs us that the Austin is running very well, but will require running-in as the car has only been driven approximately 60 miles since the completion of the restoration.
