Lot 112: Mercedes-benz 280SLC Manual

Classic, Collectors, Sports and Prestige Cars, Barons (16 July 2012)

Mercedes added an unusual, long wheelbase, sports Coupe to its SL range in 1972, the 350SLC and 450SLC. Latterly they would be joined by the six cylinder 280 and the 350 would be replaced by the 380. These cars shared the same extended SL wheelbase which featured four seat accommodation and a fixed coupe roof. Behind the front door on each side was a 1/4 window which was partially covered by a louvered panel for extra privacy. The 280 used the tried and tested 2.8 straight six while the 350/380 used the 3.5/3.8 litre V8 and the 450SLC used the more powerful 4.5 litre unit. Mercedes would also build a limited number or 5.0 cars as Homologation Specials for the cars foray into rallying. This heavy, very powerful coupe would actually finish 1-2-3 in the 1979 Ivory Cost rally. The SLC'S weighed more than their equivalent two-seat SL counterparts although performance was still good. The example offered here is extremely rare in having the 4-speed manual transmission, rather than the the 3-speed automatic, which most examples came with. This super clean SLC is offered complete with the original service booklet, which has 30 service stamps and is said to be in such good condition that it is a credit to its previous owners. Finished in metallic blue with contrasting navy blue leather, this very rare SLC offers excellent value for money
