Lot 131: Mercedes-benz 560SEC

Classic, Collectors, Sports and Prestige Cars, Barons (16 July 2012)

In 1981 Mercedes-Benz launched a two-door coupe version of the all-conquering W126 S Class saloon. These big cars were bristling with technology and were built at a time when Mercedes-Benz' reputation for engineering integrity was still at its world-beating best. Lighter and more slippery than their predecessors, the new SEC range used around 10% less fuel, yet went about their business in a similarly authoritative fashion. In 1986 came the head of the family, the mighty 560SEC whose natural habitat was the fast lane of the unrestricted autobahn. Powered by an all-alloy V8 it produced 295bhp and 336lb/ft of torque and was good for a top speed of 156mph, reaching 60mph from a standstill in just 6.7 seconds. Few cars (if any) produced before or after have been as well made, or offered as much refinement, comfort or reliability. The example offered here is a range topping 560, which has just returned from Cyprus, where it has been part of a private collection. Changes in the cost of registration in Cyprus (10,000 for a 5.0 car) has forced the owner to export the car back to the UK. Exported to Cyprus in 2008, the car was then subjected to a full, professional repaint and full mechanical overhaul by the Mercedes dealer in Limassol. The vendor spent over 5,500 on the car and it is now said to handle and drive like a new car. Finished in diamond blue with saville grey leather, the car comes complete with good history and book pack.
