Lot 141: Mercedes-benz 350SL

Classic, Collectors, Sports and Prestige Cars, Barons (16 July 2012)

When the 107SL was introduced in 1971, it had to uphold the reputation of the very successful "Pagoda" model, which had been in production since 1963 and had proved to be very popular. The 107 continued the same basic design but was a little bigger and somewhat heavier than the "Pagoda". The disappearing hood mechanism and removable hard-top remained and the engine options now included the 3.5 litre V8, which powered the new saloon range. The 107SL was a hugely successful model, which remained in production for 17 years, largely unchanged. Engine options expanded to include a 2.8 straight six and V8's, which expanded to 5.6 litre by the end of the production run in 1989. Offered here is quite a late example of the 3.5 litre, 350SL, which was registered in 1978. It is finished in white with beige interior and is offered complete with a history file, which includes many previous MoT certificates etc. The car has had just two owners since 1997, both ladies and is said to have been extremely well maintained during that time. It comes complete with both soft and hard tops, the cherished registration, LIL 4550, an MoT through to April 2013 and road tax through to March 2013. The 350SL is powered by the all alloy, 3499cc V8 that was originally used in the SE saloon of the late 1960's. The transmission was, usually, a three speed automatic, as we have here and was pretty much bullet proof, These cars, in good condition, are now becoming much sought after, as the later W129, which replaced it, does not have the same following, despite being a more advanced vehicle.
