Lot 007: MG B GT

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (18 July 2012)

The elegant Pininfarina styled MGB GT was first shown to the public in 1966 and they loved it. Practical, pretty and sporting, it had everything going for it and the public bought it in their droves. The 95bhp 1798cc engine had enough poke to make the MG truly qualify as a sportscar and when coupled with the overdrive gearbox gave genuine 90mph cruising. This means that an MGB, 50 years after its debut, still outperforms most traffic on the road, gives excellent fuel economy whilst its owner can take advantage of the best parts availability for any car in existence, including of course the supply of new bodyshells! No wonder they are so popular. The buyer of this example however will have no need of a new shell. At some time in the recent past it has clearly had a great deal of restoration work carried out, the bodyshell being particularly rust free and sound. The odometer shows 4600 miles, which the vendor takes to be the distance travelled since this restoration work. The previous owner had the car for over 10 years and confirms that new tyres were fitted in 2009 just a few thousand miles ago. Fitted with an overdrive, Webasto sunroof, new front callipers and pads, the vendor confirms that it drives well, is taxed until June 2013 and will be taxed in time for the sale so the new owner can drive it away. Whilst the panel work is very straight, with just a few blemishes, the interior has clearly been left original for the next stage in its restoration. The original leather seat covers are past their best and the carpets and headlining could do with some TLC - all straightforward stuff thanks to the ready supply of parts. The walnut dashboard appears to be a "period" addition. With the interior attended to, this would be a prime example of a nice, early GT.
