Lot 008: Sunbeam Rapier Series Iva

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (18 July 2012)

Sunbeam first introduced its two door, Hillman Minx-based Rapier in 1955. The new model looked modern and attractive and featured a pillar-less side window arrangement. With lively performance and excellent handling characteristics, the Rapier found favour amongst sporting motorists and achieved much success in rally events around Europe, most notably Paddy Hopkirk clinching the manufacturer's prize in the 1962 Monte Carlo Rally in a Series IIIA. Sunbeam continued to develop and improve the Rapier and introduced a Series IV version in 1963 with the accent more on touring than on sportiness. The cabin was made more comfortable and the suspension redesigned to improve ride quality and reduce the need for regular greasing. The 1,592cc engine remained the same but had a single Solex carb in place of twin Zeniths for easier maintenance, although power went up to 84bhp. When tested by Motor magazine it had a top speed of 91mph and a 0-60 time of 17 seconds. This particular silver grey Series IVa dates from 1965 and has been in the same family ownership since the early 1970's. The indicated mileage of just 52,000 is said to be totally genuine and the car has clearly been much cherished. It is now only for sale due to bereavement. Having seen little use in the last few years, she has recently been carefully recommissioned and issued with a fresh MOT. On a recent roadtest the vendor states that she performed faultlessly and drove as you would expect such a low mileage car to do. The factory fitted overdrive makes long distance travel relatively effortless. Being a Series IVa, she is fitted with the later all syncro gearbox. Altogether a lovely example of this highly regarded model.
