Lot 013: Pontiac 6 Sedan

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (18 July 2012)

Launched at the 1926 New York Auto Show, the Pontiac Six was actually constructed at the Oakland Motor Company factory in Pontiac, Michigan, which had been bought by General Motors in 1909. It was the first car to carry the Pontiac name and bear its famous Indian head radiator mascot, a reference to Chief Pontiac who led an unsuccessful uprising against the British shortly after the French and Indian War.

A spacious five-seater saloon with very clean and elegant lines, it was conceived as an affordable six-cylinder that was intended to woo drivers away from the only slightly cheaper four-cylinder models offered by rival manufacturers. This it did with great success and it became a popular sight on the American roads of the late-twenties. Today it looks every inch the archetypal 1920s gangster car you can just imagine Bonnie and Clyde jumping out and blazing away with a Thompson sub-machine gun.

Imported to the UK in 1999, this Fisher-bodied 1926 car looks particularly striking in green and black with big 20-inch wood-spoked wheels. Inside is very special indeed, with lovely silk brocade fabric all around and light pouring in through the large glass windows perfect for pootling down to the pub on a summer afternoon.

Power comes from a 40bhp 3.2-litre in-line six with a one-barrel Carter carb, driving through a three-speed floor-change gearbox. Purchased from us a few years ago, the current owner bought it for his wife to drive and it is for sale only due to lack of use. The car appears to be in lovely condition throughout and is said to start and run well with excellent performance from its lusty engine. It comes with a modern V5C and copies of an original owner's manual and a spare parts manual. A most appealing motor car all round.
