Lot 020: Peugeot 304S Convertible

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (18 July 2012)

The 304 made its debut at the Paris motorshow in 1969 and was to remain in production until 1980 by which time 1.2 million of the chic Pininfarina-styled mid-size Peugeots had been sold. Using the centre section from the 204, a larger front and rear were grafted on, the front mirroring the styling of the new 504 which had met with such acclaim. Independent suspension all round ensured that the astonishing ride quality associated with all Peugeots produced post war was maintained, whilst front disc brakes added a touch of technology to an otherwise fairly conventional layout. The cars were initially fitted with an all-alloy 1,288cc single overhead cam engine, but from 1972 a more powerful twin carb S version was also offered which boosted power to 75bhp, giving the car very respectable performance thanks to its light weight. A wide range of body styles were available including a lovely coupe and cabriolet all offering a very stylish and comfortable means of transport with immense Gallic charm. This particular 304 S Cabriolet dates from August 1973 and has had just three owners from new, the current lady owner acquiring it in 1990. Throughout her 22 years' ownership the car has always been well-maintained with many bills to prove and has been regularly used in the summer months and stored during the winter. It has covered around 80,500 miles from new with many old MOTs to warrant this mileage although we are informed that the mileometer has recently ceased to function. The car is said to be in generally good condition throughout although the front seats are both somewhat worn. A new canvas hood was fitted not so long ago and is in very good condition. Said to be in excellent running order and to have always proved totally reliable, it is MOTd until December and taxed until next May. Vendor states that the mileometer is not working
