Lot 023: BMW 733i

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (18 July 2012)

The flagship saloon of the BMW range, the 7-Series was launched in 1977 and has gone through five generations to date. The car you see here is a first generation E23 model, available from 1977 to 1986, which introduced many sophisticated features for its time, including an optional onboard computer quite a novelty 35 years ago. It was also the first BMW to feature service interval indicators, a 'check control' that alerted drivers to potential system faults, and efficient climate control. It is powered by a creamy smooth straight-six 3.3-litre engine that produces 194bhp and 206lb/ft of torque, good for a top speed of 140mph. Being such an early car, it also has the attractive shark nose frontal styling that was lost on post-83 models. This particular car was first registered in May 1978 and has covered a mere 39,500 miles from new in the hands of just three owners. The current vendor acquired the car 12 years ago, attracted by its remarkable originality, rare 4-speed manual gearbox and low mileage. Still in very good condition throughout, it has a lovely blue velour interior with front and rear headrests, plus nice wooden door cappings and gearstick surround. It also has central locking, a manually operated steel sunroof and good old-fashioned wind-up windows. The car is said to drive beautifully and certainly went well when we were treated to a test drive on the occasion of our visit, with a very comfortable ride and a real quality feel to the cabin. The car has lots of service history from new until 1991 plus all subsequent MOTs to warrant the low mileage. It comes with its original owner's handbook, many old tax discs, full original tool kit and first aid kit. Taxed until October and with an MOT until May 2013, this lovely old saloon would make a great family runaround with bags of Seventies charm.
