Lot 027: Bentley Turbo R

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (18 July 2012)

Released in 1985, the Turbo R was a clear indication that Britain's once most sporting marque was back with a vengeance after a period in the wilderness. No longer just a wallowy Rolls-Royce with a different badge, the Turbo R was a seriously potent sporting saloon that could hurtle five occupants down a twisty A-road at immense speed yet in conditions of sybaritic luxury. No wonder it became one of the best-selling cars that Rolls or Bentley had ever produced. The performance figures are impressive enough (330bhp and a staggering 480lb/ft of torque) but it is the way this power is delivered and the feelgood factor of the magnificent cabin that really impresses passengers. Just to be invited aboard immediately gives you a sense of VIP status and every journey turns into an occasion. This is, of course, what you would expect for 100,000 when the cars were new, so it is all the more amazing that you can now pick up a good one for less than the price of a second hand Ford Focus. And which would you rather travel in? First registered in August 1986, this Turbo R is definitely one of the good ones. It has had just three owners from new and has only covered some 87,000 miles to date with a comprehensive service history. The vendor states that this car has been maintained regardless of cost and, apart from a couple of minor stonechips, has no faults whatsoever. Any inspection is welcome. Last year it completed a lengthy tour of France and has been little used since then. Presented in striking two-tone green with a cream hide interior piped in green, it comes with an MOT until June next year. We can't believe that these fabulous machines will stay at this price level for much longer and this lovely example looks huge value at the modest guide price suggested today. Please note that the private plate shown is not included and will be replaced by an age-related number prior to the sale. Catalogue amendment; Please note that we have not yet been advised of the new number which is to be allocated to this vehicle following the registration transfer.
