Lot 040: Mini Moke

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (18 July 2012)

The Mini Moke was originally conceived as a car for the military, experiments taking place with different layouts including 4-wheel drive using two engines, one at the front and one at the rear. The limitations of ground clearance soon put paid to any serious use off-road so the firm looked to the agricultural and light commercial market. Alas again, hopes were dashed when Customs and Excise categorised it as passenger vehicle attracting purchase tax and therefore making it far too expensive to be of use. The cute looks and the sheer fun of the thing found favour with a completely unexpected audience however and went on to give the Moke a place in motoring history, thanks in no small way to over-sized beach balls and dashing around the town of Portmeirion in 'The Prisoner' TV series. Produced in the UK until 1968, it carried on being produced in Australia where 26,000 were sold and in Portugal were a further 10,000 were made between 1980 and 1993. This super Portuguese built example was part of an order sent to the Canary Islands and was despatched from the factory in December 1987. Originally Diamond White with black and red seats, it was imported into the UK in 1989 as part of a large batch of Mokes purchased by Duncan Hamilton from a hire car fleet. At this time it was left-hand drive and Hamiltons converted it and sold it to the husband of the vendor. He owned it for many years before selling it to a friend on the understanding that should he decide to sell it he would have first refusal. True to his word, he sold the car back to the original owner who then set about bringing it back to pristine condition. Through Moke expert M-Parts, the car was given a thorough make-over, removing the engine and spraying the engine bay. All small rubber parts were replaced along with many other details to bring the car back to virtually 'as new' condition. The mileage is believed correct at just 23,000 and it comes complete with a full awning with side flaps as well as a fleece-lined winter hood which was specially made for the car. A new clutch was fitted at the time along with electronic ignition, the whole bill amounting to some 3,250. With smart red seatbelts all round and in extremely good condition throughout, this lovely Moke sounds particularly sweet and quiet and is ready to go. It will have a fresh MOT by the time of sale and is only for sale due to lack of use. You will struggle to find a nicer example anywhere.
