Lot 055: BMW 3.0 CS Coupe

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (18 July 2012)

Launched in 1968, the BMW E9 Coupe was one of the most handsome cars ever to roll from the Munich factory. Sleek and shark-like, it had a wonderfully elegant and airy cockpit with slim windscreen pillars, a large glass area and a beautifully restrained wooden dash. Initially powered by a 2.8-litre straight-six, this was replaced by a 3-litre unit in 1971 that produced 180bhp on Solex carbs, later 200bhp with Bosch fuel injection which gave it a top speed of 140mph. The E9 platform, particularly the 3.0CSL lightweight homologation special, was very successful in racing, especially in the European Touring Car Championship and the German DRM series which helped to establish BMW's status as a sporty driver's car. Only 30,546 E9 Coupes were built in total before production came to an end in 1975, of which only a very small proportion were in right-hand drive making them a rare sight on UK roads today. As its accompanying Heritage Certificate confirms, this particular car was supplied new by BMW Concessionaires of London in July 1973 and was originally Turquoise with an automatic gearbox. In 2005 a previous owner treated the car to a very substantial restoration which is detailed in the large history file that accompanies the car. This included a bare metal repaint in the current dark blue, an interior retrim in black leather and the fitment of a four-speed manual gearbox. On completion the car was the subject of a five-page feature in the December 2006 issue of 'BMW Car' magazine which gives much useful information about the work carried out and a copy of which is included in the history file. Only sparingly used since the restoration was completed, the car has been in storage for some time but it is hoped that it will have a fresh MOT before the sale. With values of this iconic model rising strongly of late, this example looks a tempting prospect at the guide price suggested today. NB: This car now has an MOT until July 2013.
