Lot 067: MG A 1600 Roadster

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (18 July 2012)

The MGA was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motorshow in 1955 and was a radical departure from the traditional ash framed models that came before. It was named the MGA as it represented a new beginning and was even marketed as the first of a new line. Styled on the Syd Enever-designed Le Mans-bodied TD, it used a strong cross braced chassis with steel bodywork attached. Len Lord had originally rejected its new shape for MG having just signed a deal with Donald Healey to produce the Austin-Healey, however falling sales at MG prompted him to review his ideas. In production until 1962 when the ubiquitous MGB was launched, over 101,000 examples were produced of which only 5,900 were sold in the UK market.

This 1600 version uses the 1588cc B-Series engine which develops 78bhp. The Motor magazine tested the car to 96mph whilst 60mph took 13.3 seconds from rest spirited performance in its day.

Originally delivered in grey, this 1960 1600 was purchased by the vendor in 2004 as a project vehicle. Since then he has undertaken a major re-commissioning which has included incorporating a better chassis from a donor vehicle, as well as replacement body panels, welding to the frame as necessary and a re-paint in white cellulose. Invoices show that in 1991 the engine was re-built by Williams of Hay-on-Wye including new pistons and shell bearings, whilst a huge list of new parts has also been fitted. These include new discs and pads, clutch, master cylinders, radiator and hoses, tyres and tubes, wiring loom, battery, whilst the vendor also changed the car to negative earth and fitted an alternator with additional fuses. Cosmetically it has been treated to new bumpers front and rear, leather seats and various chrome fittings to complete the picture.

The vendor confirms that it drives well, the car sounding particularly sweet whilst being photographed. The original gearbox is also described as shifting smoothly and working as it should. Recently waxoiled, it is MOTd until May 2013 and, as can been seen upon inspection, is a presentable example offered at a realistic guide price.
