Lot 071: Oldsmobile Golfer's 2-seater with Dicky seat

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (18 July 2012)

Ransom E Olds built his first car in 1897 and by the time the last Oldsmobile left the production line in 2005, over 45 million had been produced. Initially the Oldsmobile was a low volume, highly exclusive car, however in the '20s it was absorbed into the GM empire and fitted into their vast range of brands in the upper middle segment. By 1928 it was the 12th best selling make of car in the States, sitting behind Chevrolet, Pontiac and Buick within GM's own stable. It was the F-Type that really put the firm on the volume map and in 1928, when this example was built, the firm produced over 86,000. Its powerful 3,228cc side-valve six produced plenty of power and was as reliable as they come. Quality brakes and a wide choice of body styles ensured that Americans couldn't get their hands on them fast enough. This prime RHD example was imported from Australia in 2004 and was purchased by the vendor six years ago. It had been fully restored, with superb paint work, a fabulous hood with sidescreens and is described by the vendor as in very good overall condition, running and driving well. Its tyres are unworn and the coachwork carries the rare golfer's compartments which makes it particularly appealing. A most imposing and useable car, with good brakes, a massive parts back-up and plenty of go, this super Golfer's Roadster makes an interesting alternative to the usual crop of British under-powered, under-geared and under-braked cars of the period and all for less money! There you are what are you waiting for? Catalogue amendment; Since the car arrived on site, we have not succeeded in starting the vehicle. The vendor has informed us that the fuel pump will need attention.
