Lot 074: Ford Escort RS2000

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (18 July 2012)

This exciting RS 2000 started life as a Sport. The Sport, of which relatively few were produced, was basically the same as the larger RS2000, using the same basic shell, but without the droopsnoot front and used a 1600cc Kent instead of the other car's 2-litre unit. This example has been thoroughly rebuilt to RS2000 rally/sprint specification, with a flat front as used by the works cars. The build has been done to a very high standard, using all of the 'right bits', yet remains fully road legal. The engine is a 2-litre Pinto which has been bored to 2.1-litres. It has a gas-flowed head, an FR32 cam with vernier adjustment and has been fully lightened, balanced and blueprinted. Fed by 45DCOE Weber carbs through a Pipercross air filter, it is reported to run very well and is ready for action. The RS alloy sump and bell housing mate to a T9 close-ratio gearbox, whilst the one-piece propshaft takes the drive to an English axle with new bearings and a Quaiffe 3.7:1 ATB Diff. At the front the suspension is fully polybushed and has 2.8 Bilstein shocks and 190-1 springs. Vented discs with M16 calipers do the stopping. At the rear the vendor has used Gartrac de-cambered single leaf springs, tramp bars and Bilstein shocks again. The whole car rides on new Minilite wheels shod with Yoko 048s. Looking underneath the car, the quality of the work is evident and this carries to the interior. A full roll cage is mounted to weld-in platforms, whilst the OMP seats carry 4-point harnesses. The correct deep-dish wheel and laminated top tint windscreen are complimented by an RS2000 instrument cluster, large Elliot tachometer whilst additional Race Tech oil pressure, oil and water temperature gauges and an analogue voltmeter have been fitted. A fire extinguisher system is present but as yet has not been plumbed in. With its two Cibie Super Oscars plus two normal Oscars up front, it not only looks the part, but is specified with virtually everything needed to get going. Records show that this vehicle was stolen/recovered back in May 1992. With bare shells fetching over 6,000 and with expenditure in excess of 4,000 on the engine alone, this fine example is available at a fraction of the cost to build. This has to be a most effective way of joining the ever growing historic motorsport scene, or is ready for enjoyment on the road. The V5 contains "Escort 1600 Sport", whilst the vendor says the vehicle is built towards a RS2000 spec.
