Lot 201: Yamaha RD350LC YPVS

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (18 July 2012)

Launched in 1980, the brilliantly raw and racy RD350LC was, for many riders, the high-performance bike of the 1980s. Below 6,000rpm it was nothing special, idling reliably and feeling docile. But then the motor came to life with a scream through its twin exhausts and a violent burst of acceleration that was as thrilling as it was unexpected. With just 47bhp on tap it could only manage 110mph but it was the fierce way it got there and the fine handling that made it so special. In 1983 it gained Yamaha's superb YPVS power valve system that increased mid-range thrust (and also revolutionised the two-stroke engine). A great bike all round, it is just starting to become highly collectable. This April 1986 registered RD350LC has been in the current ownership for the last four years and has been much improved during that time. The engine was rebored and new pistons fitted about 70 miles ago and it is still running-in. Said to ride very well indeed and to be in good condition all round, it is ready for immediate use or could be put away carefully for when the values of these iconic machines really begin to rise.
