Lot 413: Fiat 500F Coupe

Quail Lodge Sale, Bonhams (16 August 2012)

* 500cc air-cooled twin cylinder * Four-speed transmission * Hugely successful mass transportation * Carefully and authentically restored * Enduring symbol of "la dolce vita" A replacement for Fiat's much-loved 500 'Topolino', the Nuova 500 debuted in 1957. A radical departure from its predecessor's essentially pre-war design, FIAT's new baby featured unitary construction, an opening fabric roof and all-independent suspension. Carried at the rear, the half-liter engine was an air-cooled overhead-valve twin. The basic 500's austerity was not well received, however, prompting the introduction of a revised and better equipped version endowed with refinements such as hubcaps, wind-down windows, upholstered rear seat and column-mounted switchgear stalks. This process of step-by-step improvement would continue throughout the 500's life. Introduced in 1968 alongside the standard 500F, the deluxe 500L, while mechanically identical, came with exterior cosmetic enhancements and an improved interior featuring a new instrument panel, seats and floor covering. Known as 'Rosabella', this Cinquecento's story begins in 1967 when it emerged from the Fiat factory in Turin and spent many years living in the village of Savona being lovingly cared for by Siri Vittorio. The current owner purchased the Fiat 500 in 2011 and 'Rosabella' then underwent a year long restoration in the hands of a third generation Italian family under the direction of marque specialists Renzo Gagliardo. According to the vendor, the bodywork was stripped to bare metal and all body panels and floor pans either replaced or renewed prior to the car being repainted in bianco (white). The chrome is in lovely condition while the dash, interior panels, carpets and seats were either restored or replaced in factory correct colors of two-tone rosso and bianco. The engine was completely rebuilt and tuned, the transmission rebuilt with new parts and the electrical system re-wired. The brakes and clutch were also replaced as part of the restoration process. Having traveled only two miles since her rebirth, 'Rosabella' comes with all her tools, a spare tire and she now awaits the next chapter in her life, ready to show at events or simply be enjoyed on the road. Either way, 'Rosabella' is certain to attract plenty of attention wherever she goes. Sold with a US title.
