Lot 433: Cadillac Series 62 Convertible Custom
* 346-cid flathead V-8 * Hydra-Matic automatic transmission * Classic post-WWII custom looks * Built with driveability in mind The 1940s were a somewhat magical decade for Cadillac. Nearly every car they produced from 1940 through 1949 was in some way a standout. Every year's styling was handsome and these cars remain much sought after. Cadillacs of this era were performance leaders among American cars. The 1940-42 design successfully translated 1930s-era classic Cadillac design cues into a more modern context. The post war cars represented a return to prosperity following the rationing and other shortages that existed during World War II. 1948 heralded an all new body and chassis design, and 1949 brought with it a modern, high performance overhead valve V-8, the first all new Cadillac powerplant in some years. Cadillacs from this era truly lived up to their motto "The Standard of the World". The late 1940s also witnessed the birth of the modern automotive customizing movement, with West Coast customizers, like the Barris brothers, competing with East Coast metal wizards to see who demonstrated the best customizing skills and set the trends. Virtually any brand of car was ripe for the custom treatment, and the movement continued to grow through the 1950s and into the 1960s. The 1941 Cadillac Convertible on offer here received a subtle yet substantive 1940s style customization treatment sometime in the 1980s. Many of the most popular custom trends of the era are present and accounted for; the fenders were "leaded" into the body, the factory convertible top has been replaced by a handbuilt, three-inch chopped "Carson" style padded top, the headlights have been "frenched" into the front fenders, and the stock bumpers replaced with those from a 1947 model. A mildly hot rodded 346 cubic-inch Cadillac flathead V-8 sits beneath the long hood this engine sports dual carburetors on a period correct Edmunds intake manifold, exhaling through burbling dual exhausts. The older dark blue metallic paint job presents well, as does the comfortably patinaed red leather interior. The engine is backed by a proper Cadillac Hydra-Matic, and the car wears authentic, much sought-after Cadillac "sombrero" style hubcaps. Featuring timeless, classic lines and built to be enjoyed, it can only be said that the next owner ought to be an extrovert because it will be hard not to get noticed in this custom.
