Lot 021: Volkswagen Westfalia Camper

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (26 September 2012)

Beloved by generations of surf-dudes and independent travellers, the iconic VW Transporter was launched way back in 1950 and remains in production to this day. Over this time it has gone through five generations of development (T1 to T5), the first 'split-window' model remaining in production until 1967 when it was replaced by the T2 'bay-window' which ran until 1979. Somewhat larger and heavier than the T1, the T2 was also much better to drive with a new rear transaxle that did away with the notoriously wayward swing-axles of the original model plus front disc brakes in place of drums. Power came from a 1.6-litre 50bhp rear-mounted, flat-four, air-cooled engine with bags of low-end torque, mated to a four-speed manual gearbox. 'Heidi' as she has been called by her current and previous owners is a left-hand drive 1970 T2 with a Devon conversion. Purchased by the vendor in 2004, she had just been fitted with a fully reconditioned engine complete with unleaded heads. The vendor reports that she has required the odd bit of welding here and there for the MOT, but is basically sound and has proved totally reliable for the 16,000 miles that she has covered since purchase. Always an instant starter, the rear seats have had new foam and a re-trim, the window seals replaced and more recently the van has been thoroughly undersealed. It was re-sprayed some time ago in eye catching mauve although the bodywork in general could do with a tidy up to bring the vehicle back to top condition. MOTd until October 2012 and accompanied by a box of useful electrical service items, some chrome wheel trims and new chrome 'eye lids', you too could join the M5 south in search of sun and surf. Live the dream! AMENDMENT; Please note that the pop top and interior cupboards would indicate that this is a Westfalia conversion and not a Devon as stated in the Catalogue.
