Lot 098: Mercedes-Benz 280TE

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (26 September 2012)

Mercedes launched its W123 range to huge acclaim in 1976. Fabulously well built and with gracefully understated styling, the car was such an instant success that a booming black market sprang up to service those who wanted to leap-frog the 12-month waiting list. Most practical of all were the long wheelbase estate models which were added to the range in 1978 and gained fuel injection in 1980. Best of the estates was the 280TE which had a creamy smooth fuel-injected twin-cam 2.8-litre straight-six which produced an impressive 185bhp and had a top speed of 125mph. An impressively solid and reliable load lugger, it sold steadily until it was finally replaced by the W124 range in 1985. This particular 1981 example formerly belonged to a well-known motoring journalist and confirmed W123 addict who states that: I have owned probably a dozen of these W123 estates over the last 15 years and this is by far and away the best. I bought it from only its second owner last summer, a man who clearly doted on it. It has a full history from new, mostly main dealer, and is beautiful in all respects. Equipment includes: electric windows front and rear; power steering; rear wash/wipe; 3 x rear head restraints; Alpine stereo CD player; Hirschman ariel; manual sunroof; headlamp wash wipe; alloy wheels and seating for seven. Expensive and correct Dunlop tyres are fitted all round and new front brake discs have recently been fitted. The original tools and first aid kit are still present, along with all the original handbooks in the correct folder. The car has covered some 106,300 miles from new and was last serviced at 102,000 miles. Said to drive beautifully, it comes with an MOT until next February and is taxed until the end of March. It may be a particularly well-pampered example, but this car is testament to a Mercedes build quality that is sadly no longer with us. Just try closing those doors they don't make 'em like that anymore&
