Lot 040: Bentley Turbo R

Classic & Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (28 November 2012)

Released in 1985, the Turbo R was a clear indication that Britain's once most sporting marque was back with a vengeance after a period in the wilderness. No longer just a wallowy Rolls-Royce with a different badge, the Turbo R was a seriously potent sporting saloon that could hurtle five occupants down a twisty A-road at immense speed yet in conditions of sybaritic luxury. No wonder it became one of the best-selling cars that Rolls or Bentley had ever produced. The performance figures are impressive enough (330bhp and a staggering 480lb/ft of torque) but it is the way this power is delivered and the feel good factor of the magnificent cabin that really impresses passengers. Just to be invited aboard immediately gives you a sense of VIP status and every journey turns into an occasion. This is, of course, what you would expect for 100,000 when the cars were new, so it is all the more amazing that you can now pick up a good one for less than the price of a second hand Ford Focus. And which would you rather travel in? Sold new by HR Owen in early 1986, this very nice Masons Black Turbo R is registering 87,000 miles and was purchased late last year for the sum of 9,200. On offer from a deceased estate, a large file accompanies the car which shows that in March 2011, prior to his purchase, the car underwent a major service/overhaul with I and J Macdonald near Lanchester. The car was given a full and thorough service, whilst the rear shock absorbers were replaced along with the drive shafts, rear wheel bearings, pads and calipers. The total bill for this work was a shade under 7,000. Well cared for and little used since, this attractive car is reputed to run and drive beautifully. Due to have a 12 month MOT by the time of sale, what fabulous value these beauties represent.
