The Bentley Turbo R was based on the Bentley Mulsanne's chassis, however the Turbo R was built to be a high performance car. The Turbo R's engine was highly tuned in comparison to the Mulsanne's. With Bosch fuel injection to increase torque levels, uprated suspension, anti-roll bars and superior dampers the Bentley Turbo R was surprisingly nimble for a car of its size. Using a 6750cc V8 capable of 135mph the Bentley Turbo R was a real performer in a straight line too. Although the addition of alloy wheels, a first for Bentley, had some Bentley enthusiasts and owner's clubs thinking the car was slightly too flamboyant, rave reviews in the press helped dealers move the Turbo R in relatively substantial numbers. The sporting Bentley was back, at last. Released in 1985 the Turbo R was a clear indication that Bentley Motors Ltd intended to be at the leading edge of the fashionable sports car market. Sales were sufficient enough for Bentley to decide to cease production of the Mulsanne, despite initially intending to keep both cars in production. Once this decision had been made, the Bentley Turbo R went on to be one of the best ever selling cars that the Rolls-Royce or Bentley had built. A slight face-lift of the Turbo went ahead in 1989, with the most noticeable change being the replacement of the 2 large, square front head-lamps with quad round head-lamps; giving the car a more sporty and individual look. Eventually replaced in 1997 by the Bentley Turbo RT, 7230 Turbo R's were sold and the rarest of all are the RL LWB versions. The example offered here has been in the present ownership for over 15 years and is a two owner car. The vendor describes the car as being a truly amazing example. It is offered complete with an extensive history file including 14 old MOT's, all handbooks, manuals and service history. The service history shows 7 H.R. Owen stamps and 5 others from specialists, such as Cameron & Lunt of Liverpool and Stratton of Knutsford, Cheshire, from where the car was purchased by the vendor. The car has benefited from extensive, on-going, works - including new radiator and head gaskets fitted in 2003, full gearbox overall in 2010 and upgraded 16" alloys. Originally supplied with "special order " black velour interior (documented) the car was re-trimmed in 1997 with the current virtually new cream Connolly hide. This is the fuel injection model, is ABS equipped and is NOT fitted with the troublesome active ride suspension. The car comes with a black cotton car cover and spare wheel removal key.
