Lot 112: Abarth SP 1600

SPORTS TOURING/COMPETITION/GRAND PRIX CARS, Coys (10 August 2013)

Carlo Abarth needs no introduction. He came to Italy as part of a swap deal with the French government who had kept Ferdinand Porsche inprisoned. Italian entrepreneaur, Piero Dusio, wanted to take over Porsches midengined V12 Formula One project and in order to do so he had to pay the French government a lot of money to release Mr. Porsche and this way Porsche released their Formula 1 project. Together with the project came also a few of its engineers, namely Austrians Karl Abarth and Herr Hruska. They came to Italy and started work on the Cisitalia Formula 1 project, something that that never was meant to happen. The costs escalated out of all control and the car never worked well enough to race. Eventually these costs caused Cisitalia financial troubles. Karl Abarth managed to convince banker Scagliarini to finance a take over of the Cisitalia racing department, and the cars was were duly renamed Abarths. This was the start of a long and beautiful racing saga. This particular model is a very rare long wheel SP 1600, believed to be one of two made. It is currently fitted with a Cosworth BDA 1600 engine and has been exhibited at many car shows and most significantly has been at the Biscaretti museum in Turin as part of Abarth exhibitions. An incredibly rare opportunity.
