Lot 134: Reliant Scimitar GTC

Classic - Collectors and Sports Cars, Barons (28 October 2013)

Reliant began planning a convertible in 1977 and once againturned to Ogle Design to create a proposal. Tom Karen adapted his earlier GTE design and created awell proportioned four-seater convertible with a good, reasonable-sizedboot. All of the panels were new from the B post back, withadditional bracing between the rear side panels and door hinge plates running under the dash board. The roll hoop from the GTE was retained, and for additional support this was linked to extra tubes running around the front screen, creating a T bar design that would ensure the rigidity of the new body design. As the car sported a separate chassis and the extra bracing it did not suffer from the scuttle shakeof monocoque convertibles. The firstprototype was produced in 1978 and equipped witha 3.0 Essex engine. The GTC was launched in March 1980 and was well received by the motoring press. However in 1980 the country was heading into another recession and Reliant struggled to sell a car costing 11,360. As a result many cars were left sitting at the factory for months until owners could be found. A rare sight on the roads, the GTC is possibly the most desirable of the Scimitar models. Offered here is an example of the GTC, which is described as being in good, roadworthy condition and which runs nicely after a recent full service at Queensberry Road Garage, Kettering (well known Scimitar specialist). The car is smart, but has marks and signs of wear commensurate with the mileage of 76,000. While the mileage cannot be guaranteed there are considerable bills and documents to show care of ownership. The vendor does state that the hood has a couple of small rips and failed stitching (the rips have been sewn up). but is still useable and was watertight during a holiday this year. The car also comes complete with a rare factory hardtop in black. Finished in white with beige velour the car has an MoT through to July 2014 and is taxed until Dec 2013.
