Lot 136: Daimler Double Six Coupe

Classic - Collectors and Sports Cars, Barons (28 October 2013)

The Jaguar/Daimler XJ Coupé  was the brainchild of Sir William Lyons and first saw the light of day as a production car in 1974, as a 4.2, six cylinder. The V12 version followed shortly afterwards and could be had as an XJ12C or Daimler Double Six. The production life was short, spanning just three years, and the Daimler V12 version is, by far, the rarest version. With the styling of the XJ saloon, produced as a 2 -door, pillarless coupé, and with the legendary Jaguar V12 refinement and handling, the XJC should have been a much greater success. But as part of the lumbering British Leyland, there was no room for low volume models, so the XJC suffered a similar fate to the Triumph Stag; under-investment and poor quality control. If you have never driven a Daimler Double Six Coupé, it is hard to imagine the sheer quality of the ride and sure footedness at speed. When cruising with all four windows retracted, it is like driving a convertible and the power is delivered in a turbine-like fashion. It is difficult to find a more comfortable way to travel at speed, with just the wind noise and the scenery disappearing at a phenomenal rate. The example offered here is one of those rare Daimler Double six versions, which has benefited from a complete body restoration by Worcester Classic Cars, which also included a new interior and new chrome. The car was subsequently used for three years and then dry stored until 2012. It has recently failed the MoT test due to high emissions, so is offered for sale as a project, which requires a little work. The car is said to be to be in excellent condition bodily, structurally and has a nice interior, but the vendor does not have the time to devote to it and has decided to sell.
